Texas Longhorns Football

When most football fans talk about the great teams in college football the University of Texas at Austin Longhorns football program is typically in the list. The Longhorns play in the NCAA Division-I Big 12 Conference South Division. The Texas Longhorns have gained the title of "one of the greats" through hard work and lots of winning. Overall, the Texas Longhorns are the second winningest football team in NCAA history with 832 wins, the Longhorns are only one of seven teams to achieve over 800 wins.

Winning Tradition

The longstanding winning tradition for the Texas Longhorns dates back to 1913 when they won their first Conference Championship title, since that game the Longhorns have won 28 more Conference Championship Titles. The Longhorns have also 2 Divisional Titles. Most impressively, the Texas Longhorns have won 4 National Championships, most recently in 2005. Like any good team, the Longhorns football program is only as strong as the players it can recruit. Two former Texas Longhorn roster members have Heisman Trophies, a testament to the caliber of player the Longhorns pull in. Another nod to Texas Longhorn players is the fact that at least 1 player has been drafted into the NFL from the Longhorns program for the past 71 consecutive drafts. Currently, there are 43 former Texas Longhorns players actively playing in the NFL.

Rivalry In-State

Like most college football teams the Texas Longhorns play in a heated rivalry game every year. Annually on Thanksgiving Day or Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) the Texas Longhorns play the Texas A&M Aggies. The in-state rivalry involves elaborate pep-fests the week before the game, playing tricks on each the opposing teams (including attempted kidnappings of mascots), and bragging traditions after one team wins. The Longhorns/Aggies rivalry is the third oldest rivalry in college football history dating back to 1900 and traditionally the teams reserve the last regular season game for the "Lone Star Showdown".
